Foster Grandparents

Foster Grandparents are income-eligible volunteers aged 55 and over who volunteer a minimum of 15 hours a week with children in one-on-one and small group settings.
Foster Grandparents are placed in sites such as schools, non-profit child care centers and Head Start centers. Benefits include a tax-free stipend that won’t affect Social Security, SSI, Rent Subsidies, or any other benefit. Benefits also include paid holidays, earned time and assistance with transportation and meals.
Penquis Foster Grandparents become mentors with children by connecting with the children to share life experiences, support learning, and offer encouragement.

Join with other seniors, age 55 and over, who are volunteering with children, to help make a lasting mark on your community. In the words of one of our volunteers, “Foster grandparents are just ordinary people who reach out and take a child’s hand and together make a difference that lasts a lifetime.”

For more information about volunteering in your community, please call 1-800-215-4942 extension # 611 or visit our website at www.penquis.org

Openings are available throughout Maine. Penquis administers this program in all counties except Cumberland and York.
