Throughout our wonderful state of Maine, older residents demonstrate ingenuity, strength, and resilience. We Mainers are determined to live our lives as fully and as independently as possible, and we pride ourselves in contributing to and interacting with our communities. All too often, media depictions of older people emphasize one aspect of a person, such as wrinkly hands or the need to use a walker.
The Maine Gerontological Society (MGS) is launching a state-wide photography contest, Focus on Real Aging in Maine (F.R.A.M.E.), to refocus and reframe the way we view older Mainers by highlighting positive, realistic portrayals of aging in Maine. Photographs will celebrate the diversity of older Maine residents’ lives and their contributions to Maine towns, economic vitality, and way of life. All photographers—both professionals and amateurs of all ages—are invited to submit images for consideration.
Not sure what we are looking for or doubting you could possibly get the right photo? No worries! Professional photographer Jason Paige Smith will be holding two zoom sessions—one for amateur photographers and one for professionals—to offer some tips and guidance. We will also discuss details of the terms and conditions of the contest. Both sessions will be held on March 10. Registration may be done through the MGS website or Facebook page.
Judging for the contest will be provided by an array of fabulous Maine professional and amateur photographers! With funding from the Maine Community Foundation and Elder Abuse Institute of Maine, seven amazing prize packages will be awarded including three for professional photographers, three for amateur photographers, and one people’s choice award. Prizes include contributions to winner’s charity or non-profit of choice, cash awards, and gifts from various Maine businesses!
In addition to highlighting and celebrating the real lives of older Mainers, Maine Gerontological Society will create a library of new, relevant, and age-friendly pictures with qualifying entries that will be available for limited non-commercial use on websites and in other publications by individuals and organizations!
Submissions will be accepted from March 10—May 9, 2021. We look forward to seeing all the photo entries of positive aging in Maine once the contest begins!
