On Monday, March 11, 2019, AWWC’s Social Isolation Committee sponsored a meeting to which all Waldo County Librarians were invited. At the Searsmont library, Librarians shared ideas as well as frustrations being small libraries in rural areas. Their enthusiasm for the role of libraries in rural life was evident in their tales of activities and dedication. The meeting was also attended by Betty Johnson, County Commissioner, Jeff Trafton, County Sheriff who is active in Outreach for AWWC, Drexell White of the Maine CDC, and Dr. Carol Kuhn, an active member of the AWWC Board and Social Isolation Committee. Two librarians from the Maine State Library attended as well – Lisa Shaw and Jenny Melvin, being supportive of the efforts made by small libraries. AWWC chair Wendy C. Kasten made libraries aware of some funding opportunities.
Represented were Islesboro, Lincolnville, Searsmont, Belfast, Liberty, Stockton Springs, Frankfort, and Searsport. In addition to Belfast, there are 10 smaller libraries in Waldo County.
Members of this committee and the librarians have been meeting regularly to address ideas and challenges of providing more senior programming.
